These types of dolls were made by American Quaker abolitionists as a teaching tool and destined for the English market.
Female: Doll with painted composition head and wooden feet and hands, mid-19th century of an African American woman in a brown silk dress with a white kerchief, gray silk twill shawl and bonnet, two silk petticoats (one gray and one black) and a gray silk drawstring purse.
Male: Doll with a painted composition head and wood and composition hands and bare feet, mid-19th century, of an African American man in a gray swallowtail coat with a lighter gray waistcoat and matching trousers, an ivory linen shirt and wide brim straw hat.
