During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) Colonel John Inglis of the 32nd Regiment assumed command of the Lucknow garrison after Sir Henry Lawrences death on 4 July 1857. An experienced officer, who had fought in the Sikhs Wars, he led the resistance until Sir Henry Havelocks relief force arrived. Inglis was assisted in his endeavours by a staff officer, Captain Wilson of the 13th Bengal Native Infantry. In recognition of his services, Inglis presented him with this handsome ring.
