Image description

Restaurants created a new vogue for eating out in the 19th Century. For the first time it was acceptable for women to dine in public in mixed company. In 1851 the Great Exhibition was held in London and hundreds of visitors travelled to London to see the displays and demonstrations. This influx of visitors highlighted the lack of places in which women could eat. Slowly new eateries were opened where couples could dine together and by the 1880s dining in restaurants was popular amongst the middle and upper classes. Evan.6574
