Image description

The start of the 980-km (600-mile) pipeline from Iraq's largest oilfields at Kirkuk city which stretches to the Syrian port of Banias. Iraq's oil minister Amir Muhammad Rasheed and his Syrian counterpart Muhammad Maher Jamal held their first round of talks in Baghdad on how to reopen an oil pipleline between Iraq and Syria which has been closed since 1982. Iraq has been allowed to sell oil to buy food, medicine and other supplies under strict U.N. monitoring since December 1996 as an exception to the sweeping sanctions imposed after Baghdad's troops invaded Kuwait in 1990.
