Geared up French infantry is trekking along a muddy road. They soldiers look happy and greet the camera. French soldiers are installing a barricade of barbed wire in an open field. One of the soldiers hammers the poles into the ground, while others wrap barbed wire around the poles. Officers are watching. A division of French soldiers descends down a hill, that has been shot to pieces by artillery and grenades. They reach an open field on their way to an outpost. A large group of French officers accompanies two American officers to a shooting exercise with cannons in the trenches. They group around a mortar that is located in a trench. The young trees on the hill are completely barren. The mortar is fired over the top of the hill.
