EX PERUVIAN SECRET AGENT WAITS IN HOSPITAL FOR TESTS, 1998-03-26 (photo)

Leonor La Rosa Bustamente, an ex-secret agent in Peru's military, waits in her wheelchair to be attended at a Mexico City hospital as her mother-in-law Estela Montenegro sits with her, March 26. Bustamente was severely tortured at the hands of her ex-comrades after she was accused of leaking information regarding widespread wire-tapping and spying on prominent journalists and opposition politicians in Peru last year. Leonor arrived in Mexico February 9 this year to be rehabilitated from the devastating effects of her torture, which has left her paralyzed, deaf and blind on one side of her body. Bustamente has made a formal complaint to Mexico's human rights commision alleging that her medical treatment was grossly insufficient. Bustamente's lawyer is asking that explanations be given for the delays and incompetence. MEXICO PERU AGENT
