AN INDIAN VOTER READS INSTRUCTION ABOUT THE USE OF ELECTIONRIC VOTING MACHINE IN MEHAM VILLAGE IN HARYANA STATE. An Indian voter reads instructions about electronic voting machines outside a polling station in village Meham in the northern state of Haryana September 5 as voting began in the first phase of a month-long exercise to elect India's new lower house of parliament. Electronic voting machines have been used in many parts of the country. Around 605 million voters are eligible to take part in the voting spread over five days from September 5 to October 3. Some 500,000 policemen, in addition to an unspecified number of paramilitary guards, will monitor the elections.
