The image is inscribed on the front in ink: 'To the Honble George Pigot Esq. President of the Council & Governor of Fort St George, this view of the Ruins of the Citadel in Pondicherry is respectfully presented by John McClean, Practioner Engr. Sept 8th 1762'; also inscribed with topographical references. Pondicherry bad been besieged by the British during the Seven Years' War and had surrendered on 16 January 1761.
