Before the hearing at the Higher Administrative Court of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the plaintiff Harald Mayer, who is giving an interview to the media representatives present, is sitting in his wheelchair. The two plaintiffs and one plaintiff from Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg suffer from various serious illnesses (including multiple sclerosis and cancer). They seek access to the narcotic sodium pentobarbital for the purpose of suicide. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Bonn had rejected the applications for permission to purchase the narcotic sodium pentobarbital.
