This elderly woman's tartan skirt shows that she is Scottish. The large bundle on her back and the umbrella by her side are probably all her possessions. She is likely to be a victim of the Highland Clearances early in the 19th century. At that time, crofting families were evicted by landowners to allow large flocks of sheep to graze. She is probably on her way to sail on an emigration boat from the beach visible in the background on the left. Thomas Faed was a Scottish artist who painted many pictures showing the hardships of Scottish Highland life;
