Katsushika Hokusai (b. 1760 d. 1849), better known as simply Hokusai, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period. He was a painter and a printmaker. He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, this series features the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai is widely recognised as one of Japan's greatest artists, as he modernised traditional print styles through his innovations in subject and composition. His work celebrates the unification of Japan as a nation, alongside the diversity of landscapes.
