Image description

The shoe at weddings. When we see a shoe thrown after a departing bridal couple or fixed to the motor-car in which they are starting on their honeymoon, we are reminded that prospective brides were once objects of barter. In ancient times in the East a sale or exchange was confirmed by the ceremony of the removal and giving of a shoe or sandal. In Anglo-Saxon times the shoe became the symbol of a husband's authority, and part of the wedding ceremony consisted in the bride's father giving her shoe to the bridegroom, who touched her upon the head with it. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of Popular Superstitions issued by Godfrey Phillips in 1930.
