Why is rice thrown at weddings? The custom of sprinkling newly-married couples with rice has come down through the ages from the East. It was a ritual act with a symbolic significance, conveying a blessing and beneficent influences for a fruitful union. Among the fertility rites a prominent place has always been taken by the use of grain and fruit, and nuptial ceremonies include sprinkling cereals round the bed, handing fruit to the bride and groom, or causing contact in some way. Accompaniment of the bride by a little child, or undoing knots and laces, are all indicative of the desire for continuity of the race.
