Image description

Priest Hetepdief-This statue is the oldest example of private statuary known from ancient Egypt. Hetepdief is shown sitting in the act of worship, his two hands placed on his knees in prayer. He wears a circular thick wig, and has a short neck, which will have made the statue less breakable. On his right shoulder can be seen the Horus names of three 2nd Dynasty Kings – Hetepsekhemwy, Raneb, and Nynetjer - which could indicate that he served each of these monarchs. The name of Hetepdief’s father, Mery Djehuty, can be found on the base. cairo egyptian museum- Priest Hetepdief-JE 34557-CEM - 3008 09 023; red granite; H. 39cm; 3rd Dynasty, Old Kingdom; Memphis; Ground floor, Hall 43
