Image description

Dutch School. Oil painting on canvas, Two Dutch Children, by Dutch School, 1629. Full-length portraits of two children, turned slightly to the left, the one on the right looking at the one on the left and the one on the left, gazing at the spectator. They are seated side by side on a bench; the elder on the right has a basket of cherries, the younger on the left has an apple in each hand. Both are in white lace-edged caps and white lace-edged collars, and are dressed in black tops with long sleeves. The child on the left has a brown skirt with two black braid bands at the bottom under a white linen apron and the one on the right has a grey skirt with three black braid bands at the bottom also worn under a white linen apron. They both wear coral necklaces and the one of the right has a crucifix suspended from hers. The sit in an interior with a checquered floor, there is a wall at the back to the right in front of which is a stone balustrade and a distant view of trees and cloudy sky can be seen on the left.
