When the British invaded Afghanistan the Peshawar Valley Field Force, led by Lieutenant-General Sam Browne, captured the fort of Ali Masjid on 21 November 1878 in order to secure British control of the Khyber. Brigadier-General Frederick Appleyards 3rd Brigade, consisting of the 81st North Lancashire Regiment, 14th Sikhs and 27th Punjabis, formed one of the three columns that took part in the operation.
