Travels in the interior of North America / by Maximilian, Prince of Wied; with numerous engravings on wood, and a large map; translated from the German, by H. Evans Lloyd: to accompany the original series of eighty-one elaborately-colored plates: size, imperial folio Tableau 27 in atlas: Illustrations to Maximilian, Prince of Wied's Travels in the interior of North America. Gathering of Hidatsa men and women in a victory ceremony. Ceremonial dress, face paint and coup feathers are worn. The long poles display victory items and the pile of weapons were most likely taken from an enemy. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.
