Cutaway side-view and overhead diagrams for mounting a heavy U.S. Army mortar in a field-emplacement, a standard tactical practice during the American Civil War, accompanied by terms identifying its constituent parts. Originally engraved for publication as Plate 21 between pages 108-109 of the Instruction for Heavy Artillery manual (Washington, DC: Gideon & Co., Printers, 1851). Original line-drawing attributed to Lt. Richard H. Rush of the 2nd U.S. Artillery Regiment; original copper engraving by David McClelland of Washington, D. C.
