Image description

Globs of golden gum were left in the soils and swamps of Northland by giant kauri trees from 40,000 to 150,000 year old Buried Kauri Forests. From the 19th century kauri gum became a major export, and hopeful prospectors flocked to the gumfields, but digging gum was a tough way to make a living. At the peak of the industry there were 20,000 gumdiggers in the north. Maori, European & Dalmatian (Yugoslav) people formed this now forgotten gum digging culture and provided the basis for one of the biggest industrial booms in New Zealand's history.
